The birthday troll made an appearance at morning meeting and we sang Happy Birthday to the birthday girl. We presented Ashley with a card and her present, a portrait of her as a princess. Ashley's mom, dad AND sister all came in! Samantha, Ashley's sister and BMS alumna, read Biscuit to the whole class.
While the Daisies had yoga, the Sunflowers enjoyed Ashley's favorite snack, croissants (provided by Su Mei), and had pretend tea (provided by Margot). Then we met to on the Daisies rug to observe some of the changes we saw in the seeds we planted in the root viewer. "It's growing down" said Ava, noticing the roots "And up" said Mason about the shoots. "I'm going to eat it" added Luca. We also looked closely and carefully touched the birds nest Luca brought in. The children were curious about what Lightning would do with it, so we put it by her cage.
When the classes switched, Lakshmi noted that some children were having trouble listening. While the Sunflowers had yoga, the Daises met to discuss how we could be better listeners. We talked about how Lakshmi feels when we don't listen to her and how to show her we are listening with our bodies, our eyes and our voices. Then the Daisies observed our plants and talked about the roots. Evan explained, "Roots keep the plants in one place" and Isabel predicted that the plants would continue to grow.
We had a short freeplay and Ashley, Samantha, Sasha, Margot, Eli and Matthew went outside with Rebecca to have a tea party picnic. We also surprised Erica with some fruit, a cupcake and a card for her birthday (on Sunday).
For lunch, we had pizza for Ashley's birthday and read the book of her choice, Llama Llama Red Pajama. Then we sang Happy Birthday to Ashley and ate mini cupcakes before we said goodbye.
Thank you so much to Su Mei and Samantha for spending the day with us and bring in so many treats to celebrate! And thank you to all of the parents for schlepping sleeping bags, beach towels, tea sets, books, stuffed animals and all kinds of special accessories this week. We appreciate all your help in making this week so special!
