What's in a name?

We had a cozy and calm day back today! After saying good morning and singing a few songs, we discussed Erica's absence and her impending return tomorrow. Then we shared some of the highs and lows from out time apart.

While the Sunflowers had French, the Daisies class read Chrysanthemum and used blocks to graph their names. Then we figured out whose name was longest and whose was shortest just by looking at the blocks. When the two classes switched, Ava decided to graph her last name as well as her first name!

During freeplay, Matthew, Sam, Lukas and Ryan made magic wands out of the Zoobs manipulative and turned Rebecca into a mouse. Many children uncovered their name written in white cray-pah on watercolor paper. At the easel, Evan drew a hail storm and then made a map of the NYC subway system and the ways it intersects with the Long Island Railroad. Ashley, Ava and Tate created a map showing many different houses out of magnatiles. At the end of the morning, nearly all the children worked together to make a pirate ship to look for stolen treasure.

Since there were only 10 children at school today, we had a joint show and tell before we split for lunch. Because everyone wasn't able to share their highs and lows during morning meeting, the Sunflowers continued talking about their weekend which led into a discussion about the Olympics. Then Ava insisted we read a short book. The Daisies read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and talked about storms.
