Creating our doctor's office

What an exciting and productive day! We sang good morning twice: once in Spanish and then using a mirror. We introduced ourselves to Amelia, Linda's youngest daughter who will be spending time with us during the next two weeks. We then read Leonardo the Terrible Monster before splitting for music.

While the Daisies had music, the Sunflowers noticed that the teachers rearranged dramatic play space to make room for the children to build a doctor's office. The children used hollow blocks to build their own furniture to furnish the space. First the children built a couch and a chair on the blue rug. Then they chose certain pieces to bring up to the doctors office; "Oh great guys!" Ava exclaimed looking at the transformed space. Then we met again to discuss how we were going to use the furniture. Margot thought the couch could be used as an examination table, but Ryan Q. thought that was "very weird."

When the Sunflowers had music, the Daisies started talking about how to furnish the doctors office, but then began discussing various roles (doctors, patients, nurse, EMT) that children would need to take on. They grappled with how to assign these roles and how to identify who was playing which role. Ryan Casey suggested that the doctors should have name tags to identify themselves.

During freeplay, Ava, Ashley, Margot, Mason, Isabel, Jake and Eli made name tags for the doctors and patients to wear. Then Sam, Oliver, Ryan Casey and Lukas tried them out in the new doctor's office. At the other table, Evan, Tate, Ryan Q., Margot and Mason painted with rocks (an idea Evan had last week). Then Mason built an airplane out of hollow blocks. While he and Oliver piloted the plane, many children gathered with Rebecca on board to read books.

During lunch, both classes switched jobs and the Sunflowers read When Sophie Gets Angry- Really, Really Angry.
