Let's hunt for numbers!

During morning meeting today, we sang hello and Five Brown Buns. Then Lukas went in the other room to work on his self-portrait with Rebecca while the rest of the class planned for his birthday portrait. We talked about the things we enjoy doing with Lukas and what possible materials to use for his self-portrait. Some of the ideas were beans, paint, wood, dough, cardboard and plastic.

Then we read Pete and His 4 Groovy Buttons and practiced subtraction before dance with Elizabeth. Oliver helped take away one button after each button popped off.

Based on many children's interest in numbers, we had a number scavenger hunt. The children had to find the numbers written on sticky notes all around the room and place them on a strip in numerical order. Most children decided to work in teams. After she found the number 3, Ashley said "Next we need 4" and Ava walked around the classroom calling, "Little 4! Where are you little 4!" Eli was also looking for the number 4, when Alex came up to him and said, "Eli, I found the number 4 for you!"

Also during freeplay, Jake wrote a book about toys going to space, which he shared for show and tell. Isabel and Ashley started writing their own books as well and Sam wrote a book about Batman.

In the block area Sam created the numbmer 3 train. He even wrote the number three on paper and stuck it to the front. Then Ryan added triangles which he said were waves because the train was flooded. Later on Sam added a platform to the train with carpet squares and unit blocks.

At lunchtime in the Sunflowers classroom, we talked about some of our favorite books to read. Rebecca commented on how frequently children have asked to read The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear and thought that maybe we could come up with a new, different ending when she read it today. In our new version of the story, it took place at BMS and there were two bears (played by Ava and Ashley) who came and gobbled up the the mouse and the strawberry. Ava enthusiastically suggested we could act it out with finger puppets or "for real" for the rest of the class.

The Daisies, actually not knowing this was going on in the Sunflowers class, also requested we read The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear as well.
