Then we had a very special treat- Eli's grandmother, Debbie, came in as our surprise reader! Eli sat right next to her and helped her hold the book and turn the pages. Then Debbie taught us to make origami boats based on the book she read.
During our project work time, the children created their own obstacle course out of blocks and poly spots. They started pretending there were sharks in the water around their obstacle course, so the teachers brought out alligator and shark toys. Suddenly, the animals decided to chase Rebecca to the blue rug where she was overwhelmed by them and bitten by an over-eager alligator on her leg.
The children had many ideas about how to deal with this emergency. At first, the children were calling the police and the fire department but quickly realized that it would be most helpful to call a doctor. Oliver checked her blood pressure and Ryan determined she had a fever. Ryan concluded, "Maybe food would help" so a group of children went to the kitchen to make food for Rebecca. Evan thought "the problem is you're not getting enough blood to your boo boo." First he suggested that she wiggle her toes so the blood would go down. Then he asked her, "what kind of blood do you have?" He procured some O+ (a red blanket) and handed it to Rebecca. She asked him how the blood would get inside her body and he decided she should apply it to her boo boo. After listening to Rebecca's moaning, Jake was most concerned with her emotional well-being. Jake came over and read a book to her, a common strategy our classroom comforter uses when someone is feeling sad. Oliver and Sam then gave a very frightened Rebecca some shots. Eli, our voice of reason, try to calm her by reminding her that this was all just pretend.
During lunch, Jake shared his holiday tradition for show and tell and the Daisies read If I Ran the Circus.
