Conversation about doctors

We began morning  meeting by singing Who took the cookie from the cookie jar and then added up all the cookies by two. Most of our meeting this morning consisted of our first real discussion about doctors. We asked the children What are doctors? When do you go to the doctor? and What do doctors use to make you better? During this discussion, the children also raised the questions of who works in a hospital, if animals go to the hospital, what an ambulance is and if fire trucks take people to the hospital.

After our discussion we had dance with Elizabeth and then Ms. Rebecca worked with both Ava and Jake on their self-portraits. On one table children wrote stories about whatever they wanted. Eli wrote a story about his vacation, Sam wrote a book about batman, Alex wrote a story about monsters, Ashley wrote a book about her family and Evan wrote a story about a freight train. Evan later shared his story for Show and Tell. The Sunflowers class read Eli and Ashley's books during lunch and talked about the difference between fiction stories, like Eli's books, and non-fiction books like Ashley's.

On the other table, Sam Izzie, Jake and Lukas painted with sticks and then Izzie, Sam, Ava and Lukas played family in the dramatic play area. Oliver and Ryan started to roll paper to make a sand machine, but quickly decided they wanted to decorate them first. They began drawing on them and even writing words on the outside.

On the blue rug, Ashley, Jake and Alex read voraciously. Ashley read several books aloud to her friends, Alex educated us all about sea creatures and Jake soaked up the stories and loved having so many people who wanted to read to him.
