Birdhouses galore!

Due to the rain, we had to cancel our walk to Chelsea Market, but the children channeled their energy into a lot of collaborative and child-directed projects. During our morning meeting we talked about our favorite part of the parade (there seemed to be universal consensus that it was the candy) and read, It's Pumpkin  Time!

While one group of children had yoga, Evan, Matthew, Ryan Q., Lukas, Margot, Ava and Eli (our slide/park birdhouse committee) met and build a draft of Lightning's house. There were many ideas, including Ryan Q's to build "a place to bop germs so nobody can get sick in the school- a doctor birdhouse"

When the groups switched for yoga, many of the children seemed to be inspired by the birdhouse committee structures they saw on the rug. Sam and Ashley worked on a birdhouse"where she cannot come out." Mason came over and exclaimed, "It's a castle!" Nearby, Ryan Casey was building another birdhouse. He said, "This birdhouse is for a community. One hundred birds live here." He was very receptive to the changes Oliver made, adding a road with cars inside the structure. Jake and Mason worked beside them creating a road out of unit blocks.

Meanwhile, working at the tables, Sasha, Ryan Q. and Alexander wrote their own books. Children created a fall wreath out of leaves from Central Park, designed shapes on geoboards and made cakes out of play dough.

At the end of the day, the whole school gathered to watch Rebecca and Jenny act out The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything. During lunch, the Sunflowers class played the prediction game and the Daisies class read Fine as We Are.
